Are too many children on the autism spectrum being given psychotropic medication as a way to manage their behavior? When a 2012 study released by the National Institute of Mental Health showed that 56 percent of children and teens on the spectrum are taking one or more meds, critics pounced. The strongest language comes from self-advocates, who deem the drugs “chemical straitjackets” used to make it easier for parents and teachers to manage challenging kids. While there is no medication that affects the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) — difficulties with communication, social interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors — these kids are being treated for conditions often associated with autism, including anxiety, hyperactivity, and aggression. The drugs clinicians are increasingly prescribing are aimed at curbing a range of problematic and sometimes dangerous behavior patterns that include everything from sleep disorders to violent meltdowns. These episodes aren’t a toddler’s tantrums; autistic children unable to express their anger and anxiety may become so overwhelmed they put themselves and other family members at risk. Some examples: breaking glass, throwing heavy objects, biting and head-butting. This is the second of two articles on anxiety in autism. The first, "Anxiety's Toll on People with Autism," explores symptoms and diagnosis. A related blog is The Hardest Part of Having Autism? For years, the Gilroys resisted giving anxiety medication to their daughter, Lindsay. Back then, some 20 years ago, no one knew how these drugs would affect someone with autism, like Lindsay. But her anxiety worsened, affecting her at home and school. "In her late teens, things really started falling apart," said her mother, Susan. At that point, the teen began taking an anti-anxiety drug and later her doctor added a second medication when new symptoms arose.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two drugs for treating irritability associated with the autism (risperidone and aripiprazole). The prevalent behavioral problems associated with autism spectrum disorder, including repetitive behavior, communication, and social issues, have not been able to be improved by medication at this time, since there are no drugs are currently approved to address these core symptoms. A major Swiss pharmaceutical company, Roche, says it has received a designation from the Food and Drug Administration to help expedite what could be the first drug to treat these core characteristics of autism. Roche released news in January 2018 that the FDA has granted its breakthrough therapy designation for the development of balovaptan, a drug that potential to improve “core social interaction and communication” in those with autism. Results from a clinical trial in adults with autism released in 2017 indicate that balovaptan was successful in helping to improve challenging social behaviors. Additionally, it was deemed safe and well tolerated. Another trial looking at children and adolescents on the spectrum is underway and additional studies are in the works. Improving these problems could help a person with autism spectrum disorder function more effectively in all areas of their lives. ’s free newsletters."data-newsletterpromo-image="https://static.scientificamerican.com/sciam/cache/file/458BF87F-514B-44EE-B87F5D531772CF83_source.png"data-newsletterpromo-button-text="Sign Up"data-newsletterpromo-button-link="https:// origincode=2018_sciam_Article Promo_Newsletter Sign Up"itemprop="article Body"Connor was diagnosed with autism early — when he was just 18 months old. “He was lining things up, switching lights on and off, on and off,” says his mother, Melissa. He was bright, but he didn’t speak much until age 3, and he was easily frustrated. Once he started school, he couldn’t sit still in class, called out answers without raising his hand and got visibly upset when he couldn’t master a math concept or a handwriting task quickly enough. “One time, he rolled himself up into the carpet like a burrito and wouldn’t come out until I got there,” Melissa recalls. (All families in this story are identified by first name only, to protect their privacy.) Connor was prescribed his first psychiatric drug, methylphenidate (Ritalin), at age 6. That didn’t last long, but when he was 7, his parents tried again. And then it became something Connor began to obsess over. A psychiatrist suggested a low dose of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine (Adderall), a stimulant commonly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). “We were told that these are the gives and takes; if it’s helping him enough to get through school, you have to decide if it’s worth it,” Melissa says. But when the Adderall wore off each day, Connor had a tougher time than ever.

My 13 year old is on Abilify(low dose) and recently (2 months or so ago) the doctor added zoloft. The combo seemed to work well but the weight gain has been HUGE. She is a taller child but 150 at 5'6 is too high and obesity is only going to add to the social issues she already has. The doctor said the zoloft increases the side effects of the abilify. This was a child who was a picky eater and now eats EVERYTHING. The doctor said diet and exercise, not that simple believe me! If there are four pears in in the fruit bowl she will eat two at a time. She cannot help herself and worse yet she talks about food constantly in an obsessive manner.. I'm currently taking Lamictal and Zoloft but I haven't experienced any weight gain at all.
