It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. I was told from the start by my rheumatologist I would have to have eye exams including visual field exams every six months due to the plaquenil therapy. My first two exams did include these tests. But my next six month appointment is coming up, and they told me I didn't need the visual field test this time so the appointment would be shorter. Plaquenil is a drug routinely prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Plaquenil has long been associated with retinal toxicity which can lead to vision loss. In particular it affects the macular region of the retina which is responsible for central vision. I wear varifocals and have done for years but my night vision is appalling, very blurred with or without my glasses. I have heard of one other person whose eyes were effected by the Plaquenil, and they had to come off it and the eyes did improve. To my knowledge the chances of anything occuring are remote and I have not encountered anyone who has had a problem due to plaquenil. I have got an opthalmologist appointment at the hospital on the 14th of this month because in the last 6 months I have noticed problems with my eyes, whether it is the plaquenil or not is yet to be discovered.
