    Hydroxychloroquine and antacids

It says on the bottle I can’t take an antacid for at least four hours after taking the Plaquenil. I hate heart burn:( I take a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) essentially antacid in the morning that is supposed to last all day. I would ask your pharmacist first and see if it matters whether it is just a 'tums' or medication strength. I think if it keeps happening I’ll go talk to my pharmacist to see what they recommend. Has anyone else experienced heartburn while taking Plaquenil and if so what did you do to avoid or ease the heartburn? If they are not able to give you an answer your Family Dr or Rheumatoid will know. Fortunately the heartburn goes away after a few hours, but those few hours are very uncomfortable!

Sometimes what is suggested (no antacid for 4 hours) is not necessarily required if it means you can't or don't want to take your plaquenil anymore. the antacid will affect the absorption of the plaquenil and the amount your body can absorb.
